    Description

13-inch vintage antique composition McGuffey Ana by Madame Alexander, from the Princess Elizabeth mold from 1935 in very good played with condition
. She is one of the earliest McGuffey Ana dolls, but is in such good condition, you would not expect her to be this old. She is from my collection and I am selling two McGuffey's, this one and a modern porcelain that I will list on another listing. She has been displayed in an enclosed doll case away from heat and sun.
McGuffey Ana was a character in the McGuffey Readers, textbooks used in American schools from the mid-19th century on. Madame Alexander designed her doll to be a little school girl just as was the textbook character.
This McGuffey has three things that identify her as one of the earliest dolls: Tin eyes, human hair and a mark of x inside a circle (known as Circle X). There were a handful of American doll makers who used the Circle X mark. According to
    dollreference.com
    (one of my preferred resources)
Arranbee, Ideal, Madame Alexander as well as others used this mark in the early years. Madame Alexander used it on the Princess Elizabeth doll mold. I have another one with this special mark or I wouldn't want to give this one up.
Please look carefully at all of the photos and I will give my best description of each part of her. She is over 85 years of age, but you would not know this by the condition of her composition.
Head marked: X inside circle (Circle X); Body marked: 13
Head composition is excellent with only some very faint crazing on right side of chin and cheeks (hard to see); no cracks or splits even around the eyes. She has a rub nest the the right side of her mouth and a couple of scuffs. McGuffey has a wonderful human hair wig in braids with curled bangs; it appears to never have been combed out of its original set. She has blue tin sleep eyes with real upper lashes (no missing lashes), painted lower lashes (some are a bit faded below the left eye), two stroke painted eyebrows, open mouth with 4 teeth, red tongue and red lip color with some missing paint on lower lip.
    Body:
Composition in really good condition. She has worn paint on her bottom and a chip of paint missing on each hand (please see photos) and a little mommy from her long ago past has painted her nails. There is a tiny star-point split on the back of her upper left thigh and she has some scuffs from play. Her stringing is tight; likely, I restrung her when I got her.
    Clothing:
McGuffey Ana's clothing is replaced vintage clothing from her same era. If her outfits looks familiar, you have a good eye; it is from a 13" Arranbee Bright Star with composition in poor condition so I gave her dress and apron to McGuffey. The little red dress pins in back and has attached onesie panties. It has a facing at the collar that I'm not sure if it goes in or out. The little voile apron ties in back and has considerable fraying on the ties, but is good everywhere else.
She has ivory socks and pink oilcloth Mary Jane shoes with pink ties and buckle adornments. I think the shoes are original, although the ties appear new.
No returns please unless I have somehow misrepresented her in my description. Thank you.
