    Description

This is a free floating crinoid from the Jurasic period.  The matrix is  2 1/2 by 2 inches.   The fossil is about 5/8 inch across. It is quite small but looks larger in the pictures.    It is a great specimen with great detail but it takes magnification to see it clearly.  I looked it up in my fossil books and it says these came from the limestone beds in Germany.   While most Crinoids attached themselves to the sea floor with a stem and holdfast, crinoids of the order Comatulida, also known as feather stars typically do not have stalks.  They live on the seabeds and reefs in tropical or temperate waters.
