Description
The Old Stone House Brownington Vermont Blue Sponge Unity Stoneware Decorative 10 3/8" Display Plate of Historic Site of 1836. This hand decorated stoneware plate made in Newport, Orleans County, Vermont, depicts the face of the massive granite boarding house in Brownington, Vermont, complted in 1836 by Vermont-born and Middlebury College educated Rev. Alexander Lucius Twighlight (1795-1857) who came to Church and Principle of the Orleans County Grammar School. Twighlight is said to have been the first black college graduate in the U.S..The building was acquired by the Orleans County Historical Society in 1918 and over the decades since then, its 25 rooms have been filled with hundreds of historical objects of the region's past and is known today (1990 created plate) as the OLD STONE HOUSE MUSEUM open for public tours on a seasonal basis.
Because of the nature of the Commemorative Plate's center decoration, it is not oven or dishwasher-proof and so its use is intended as a display plate and should be hand-washed. ORLEANS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY; Orleans, Vermont.
