    Comments:
This is a museum quality example of a Triassic crinoid or sea lilies, called a Traumatocrinus. Traumatocrinus lived attached to driftwood and was widespread across the Paleo-Tethys. In contrast to its benthic encrinid ancestors, Traumatocrinus fixed its distal column to the substrate, preferentially to the ends of the driftwood logs. Crowns are preserved in star position with radially splayed arms or in lateral bell position with the cup disrupted in interbrachial position. This genus of crinoid occurs in the Carnian-age. 232 million years ago, during a span known as
the Carnian age, it rained almost everywhere. After millions of years of dry climates, Earth entered a wet period lasting, one million to two million years. Nearly any place where geologists find rocks of that age, there are signs of
wet weather. This so-called Carnian pluvial episode coincides with some massive evolutionary shifts.
The stem of Traumatocrinus individuals may exceed 11 m in length. Colonies attached by root cirri to logs of driftwood may consist of more than 150 individuals. After the end-Carnian extinction of Traumatocrinus, its ecological niche was taken over in Norian times by Seirocrinus and Pentacrinites with convergent morphological modifications.
This specimen was found in the world famous, early Late Triassic (Carnian) Xiaowa Formation of Guanling County in Guizhou province, China. This specimen is a gorgeously preserved stem and head of a Traumatocrinus that boast an incredible level of detail with its frond-like arms splayed out. The fossil is thin and fairly light weight.
